What is Active Release Techniques® (ART)?
Active Release Techniques® (ART) is a patented, state of the art, Soft Tissue Management System that was developed by Dr. Michael Leahy, DC, CCSP. ART allows the certified provider to evaluate and treat all soft tissue including muscle, tendon, fascia, ligament and nerve. These structures, either from direct trauma or overuse, can become inflamed and then tight/ fibrotic resulting in restrictive adhesions. Results of this can cause pain, tightness and loss of strength, power and balance. Some of the common injuries successfully treated with ART include shoulder impingement, swimmer’s shoulder, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, shin splints, ITB syndrome, plantar fascitis, whiplash and neck and back pain. ART has proven to be very effective with quicker recovery time and more lasting effects for athletes, novice to professional, post-operatively as well as for chronic pain from repetitive movement at work or home.
How is ART different?
ART is different than massage, physical therapy and chiropractic care. The ART provider uses his/her hands to determine the texture, tightness and movement of all types of soft tissue. Once the problem areas are identified treatment is applied by generating tension at the problem area while specific movements of the body are completed. There are several hundred treatment protocols that have been developed for treating the entire body.
